Harvest is underway on early walnut varieties in the California Central Valley. Expectations are for a smaller size crop than last year’s large crop. Various factors such as lack of chill hours, bloom weather, and walnuts being an alternate bearing crop are all playing a part in the expected smaller crop this season. So far, the quality looks average and sizing seems to be a little smaller to average. Sellers are being cautious on quotations until they get a better handle on what comes in from harvest. The Chandler variety will round out harvest by the close of October. We’ll see how the market develops as we get a little farther along with harvest. Stay tuned!
